Background
Established in 2007, Wantirna Health in Wantirna is part of the Eastern Health network of support services, is a purpose-built palliative care and Geriatric Medicine hospital. Wantirna Health provides a wide range of ambulatory services, including home-based and centrebased rehabilitation and specialist clinics. An adjoining building for aged care residents was opened in August 2022.
The Green Solution
Since the inception of the new aged care facility onsite, Eastern Health wanted to create a sustainable environment, having a kitchen onsite providing meals all day long they looked for a solution to divert the food waste from the start. The WasteMaster was included in the planning stage of the development with a dedicated area to be installed.
Quantifiable Results
Since the initial installation in August 2022, WasteMaster has delivered significant results for Wantirna Health. This includes:
9.9 tonne diverted from landfill
3.2 tonne of CO2 eq reduction for the site
1,541 homes powered by green electricity produced by sites residue that was sent to an Anerobic Digester.
Positive Outcomes
A number of positive outcomes have been generated due to the installation of WasteMaster at Wantirna Health.
WasteMaster has been successful at diverting food waste from landfill since opening day, preventing harmful emissions.
Reduced truck movements to new loading dock
Cleaner dock area with less liquid leaking if food waste was dumped in general compactor.
