Background
Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) provides healthcare services across northern Adelaide, including Lyell McEwin Hospital. As part of its commitment to reducing emissions and improving sustainability, NALHN installed a WasteMaster from Green Eco Technologies at Lyell McEwin Hospital in late 2025, supporting its Carbon Management Plan. The initiative has since been recognised through NALHN being named a finalist in the 2026 SA Climate Leaders Awards in the Government category, for its work to reduce hospital food waste emissions.
The Green Solution
NALHN installed WasteMaster at Lyell McEwin Hospital to support its ongoing efforts to reduce food waste and emissions.
WasteMaster dehydrates food waste on site, significantly reducing its volume and producing a reusable residual material. This material is collected and converted into nutrient-rich agricultural compost, helping to keep organic resources in productive use.
The system also generates data on food waste, helping NALHN identify waste trends and opportunities to refine menus and portion sizes.
Quantifiable Results
Within the initial months following installation, WasteMaster delivered significant results for Adelaide Convention Centre. This included:
56 tonnes of food waste diverted from landfill
19 tonnes of compost like residue produced
119 tonnes of CO2 eq reduction for the site
