Epworth Geelong Food Waste Success with WasteMaster

Epworth Geelong general manager Leonie Lloyd, head chef Mark Parsons & Epworth Healthcare sustainability manager Simon Mikedis with WasteMaster from Green Eco Technologies.

Epworth Geelong’s successful implementation of our WasteMaster system has been featured in new reports from the Geelong Independent and the Geelong Advertiser, highlighting the work undertaken to improve site sustainability by converting tonnes of food waste into compost, and long term plans to use the waste to generate electricity.

Epworth Geolong Executive General Manager Leonie Lloyd told the Geelong Independent that Wastemaster, which is already processing about 150kg of food waste a day, was an example of the hospital’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The hospital installed our award-winning Wastemaster as an effective solution to convert and repurpose food waste into a much-smaller amount of reusable material, preventing harmful greenhouse gas emissions in the process.

According to the Epworth Geeling team, one of the biggest contributors to their carbon emissions was food waste from the kitchen, with tens of thousands of kilograms of food offcuts previously taken from the kitchen to landfill.”

Epworth HealthCare Group sustainability manager Simon Mikedis told the Geelong Independent that the residue produced from food waste by WasteMaster will be used in nutrient-rich compost created at a City of Greater Geelong facility for use in local parks and reserves, creating a ‘win-win for Epworth and the City of Greater Geelong’. In the long term, Epworth intends to ‘partner with an anaerobic facility so food waste residue can produce electricity to power homes.’

Our work with Epworth stretches back to the first ever installation of a WasteMaster at a hospital in Victoria at Epworth Richmond, which has converted more than 36,000 kilograms of kitchen waste from in its first year of operation. Geelong Independent notes this success, reporting that the residue generated here from food waste was used to create enough electricity to power five homes for an entire year. This in turn has prevented 135 tonnes of food waste going to landfill, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 224 tonnes.

Rohan Dinn, Global Sales Operation Manager for Green Eco Technologies commented on this success, “Green Eco Technologies is proud to partner with an innovative business such as Epworth Healthcare who continually strive to improve their environmental footprint by taking the lead in implementing new sustainable technology. The results achieved from diverting their food waste are a testament to Epworth as a whole.”

This latest Epworth success story has also received publication in the Geelong Advertiser as featured below, with the full Geelong Independent report now available to read online via their website here.
