James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust recently celebrated a significant awards win, highlighting the hospital’s initiatives and continuing work to recycle waste generated on site.

The Green Apple Environment Awards recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. Recipients are recognised for their steadfast commitment to improving their positive environmental credentials.

James Paget received two awards including the coveted Gold Award for their food waste disposal, supported by Green Eco Technologies, a prime example of how the trust has worked diligently in moving towards Net Zero. Peter Huttley, Head of Facilities Management at the James Paget, was presented with the Awards at a special ceremony at the House of Parliament.

Utilising our innovative WasteMaster system, hospital food waste is disposed of in a more environmentally friendly way. Rather than going to landfill or being washed away via macerators, the waste is converted to energy, thanks to a process which speeds up the natural decomposition. WasteMaster breaks down the cellular structure of the food, releasing the moisture and reducing the total volume by up to 80%.

In addition to the Green Apple Environment Awards success the hospital, alongside Green Eco Technologies, were also shortlisted in the 2022 Sustainability Partnership Awards.

Writing for Green Eco Technologies, UK Commercial Director Katie Young said, “Green Eco Technologies are delighted that James Paget Hospital has won the Gold Green Apple Environment Award for their sustainable repurposing of food waste with our WasteMaster technology. The WasteMaster reduces and diverts food waste away from landfill and drains, but also provides automatic measurement and reporting of every bin which allows James Paget to accurately record and monitor their waste at the touch of a button.”
